Solar electric tile integration. This is a topic that has been very highly scrutenized. Why do we care about this type of roof system? Basically the way it works is that we are extremely dependant on petroleum for our survival. Unfortunately the most abundant energy source is the one we try to combat everyday, THE SUN. All day we run air conditioners and spend money on all kinds of so called Energy Star products, but we ignore one basic concept…..that is, our roof is a totally an unused area of valuable real estate. Roofs are very tricky since it is important not to compromise its water proof integrity. You see all kinds of solar installers constantly promoting rack mounted systems with penetrations. I don’t know about you, but if I was trying to stay dry, 30 plus holes in my roof might complicate things a little! And this reason is why we have invented T.I.P.V. (Tile Integrated Photovoltaic). Remember this acronym for this is the only succesful way to introduce solar into residential sloped roofing without the high costs and poor aesthetic appeal. Another important term is “Useful Life”. The average roofer warranties a job for ten years and panels are sometimes for twenty. Simple math would dictate that if your roof is…… lets say 12 years old and choose to retrofit you’ve lost the ten year warranty period and have made penetrations in a roof that may be reaching the end of the term of its useful life. What we would like to accomplish is the integration right from the beginning so both technologies will have the longest useful life together. We do this without one single pentration to the deck by replacing nails, screws, and bolts with foam adhesive which is becoming the industry standard for highest performance.
